The English Language Club was inspired by the students’ need to practice speaking English outside the classroom as a means of improving and developing their skill. The club tries to compensate for the lack of exposure opportunities to English as a second language for our students. Besides the main goal, the club strengthens and enhances the communicative skills, the leadership qualities through the training the students experience through their practical discourse. The club provides an optimal learning environment for students who have the potential for such extra-curricular activities.
The aim of the English Language Club is to raise a confident generation, to build a generation confident to express itself in English without hesitating or being afraid to pronounce/spell words wrong through our spelling, speaking and debate contests as well as making use of Scrabble Board games to create a fun learning atmosphere.
The club was established in 2011 to serve the students of Yanbu Industrial College and later extended its services to the other two branches; Yanbu Technical Institute and Yanbu University College-female campus.
The English Language Club offers students a chance to learn and practice what is learned through certain activities. These activities come in the shape of speaking competitions, debate competitions, spelling competitions and word game competitions such as scrabble.
In the speaking and debate competition, the topic of the competition is announced before the day of the activity, so that the participants can have enough time to read, listen and write before they speak on the topic.
In the spelling competitions, two birds are hit with one stone. New words, which are usually the most common words in a certain field, are introduced to students who are supposed to know the spelling and the meaning.
Word games, such as Scrabble, are the most enjoyable. Students are trained to play the game with their colleagues and teachers. After they acquire the experience and the techniques of playing, they become ready for the competitions.
Community service is the other side of the experience. Members of the club utilize their knowledge and in serving the community they live in. This community service comes in many different shapes such as participating in volunteer work or social festivals that deliver a message about a common topic.
