All regular students, at all YELI Units, are placed on a course according to the results of a standardized and internationally recognized Aptis test, or verified sufficient IELTS or TOEFL scores.
Aptis was developed by the British Council and is used by YELI to ensure that all of our students are placed in the course that matches their ability level.
Aptis is mapped to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), which provides internationally recognized levels of proficiency. These levels range from A1 (Very Basic) or absolute beginner, through C2 (Very Proficient), which is native-like fluency. YELI has been accredited to the B2 (Very Independent) level, meaning that our graduates are capable of studying without difficulty at an English university of their choice anywhere in the world.
These CEFR levels in turn have corresponding levels of proficiency on other commonly known scales, such as the Cambridge Scale, IELTS, TOEFL and TOEIC. No matter where you come from or your background in English, YELI can make sure you’re placed on the course which is right for you.
If you are unhappy with your placement, you can appeal against it by submitting an official request to your Head of Unit. If you appeal, you will have an opportunity to take a Quick Test. The Quick Test is based on the learning outcomes on the course and will help us check your proficiency and make sure we put you on the course that’s right for you.
